40 Things to Do When You’re “Overdue” in Greater Victoria, Westshore and Sooke

CCDoula - 27 - webYour ‘due date’ has passed and you’re feeling antsy – when will this baby decide to make his or her or their appearance!? As a birth photographer I’m just as excited when my mamas come to the end of their pregnancy!

To help the days pass a little quicker and with a whole lot more enjoyment, here are 40 things to do when you’re overdue! (Specifically for the Greater Victoria, Westshore and Sooke area!). Enjoy!!

  1. Cook up some freezer meals
  2. Dress yourself up and book reservations for a fine dining experience (Sooke Harbour House, Glenrosa Farm Restaurant, or Restaurant Matisse are perfect venues and will accommodate pregnant moms and their eating restrictions)
  3. Do your Kegel exercises! On a bus… at home… do them everywhere! Do them!
  4. Stop in at the Beacon Hill Drive-In for some poutine and/or ice cream
  5. Check out what’s playing at the Imax Theatre
  6. Book a mini getaway ( Point-No-Point Resort or Tigh-Na-Mara Resort; both offer intimate accommodations, delicious foods and stunning westcoast views AND the hot tubs available at Point-No-Point can be adjusted to a SAFE and enjoyable temperature for expecting mamas!!)
  7. Treat yourself to a pedicure – it is impossible reaching your toes these days!
  8. Make a rice sock for labour
  9. Book an appointment to have your car seat inspected by the fire department or local car seat technician
  10. Pack snacks to bring or set aside for labour
  11. Go shopping or crochet a special item for baby to come with or be dressed in; Bubba Loo Children’s Boutique has beautiful choices, including pieces for preemie sizes!
  12. Put together a play list for labour
  13. Buy any special occasion cards (birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc) that you might need for dates up to 6 weeks after baby is born
  14. Bring over a friend and make a belly cast, then paint it!
  15. Charge every battery of every device (camera, phone, ipad, mp3 player) you want to have before, during and after baby has arrived
  16. Visit Chapters downtown location, Bolen Books or Hallmark and pick out a baby book
  17. Take a video of your tummy while baby kicks
  18. Create a video of yourself talking about what life is like before baby, who the people are that are excited to meet him/her/them, what your hopes and dreams are for them.
  19. Pick-up a new book that has nothing to do with babies, pregnancy, or birth – something to purely read for fun!
  20. Try on some baby carriers at your local baby wearing group or stop by Momease Baby Boutique, Abby Sprouts or TJ’s Kiddie Store to see their selections in person
  21. Stock up on giant bus sized overnight pads (and soak them in witch hazel then freeze!)
  22. Spend time with your babies who are about to be promoted to big sister or big brother – Quoola date anyone??
  23. Look into mom groups that are local to your area, walking groups, or post-natal exercise groups to start connecting with others! Sooke Family Resource Society, Hot Mama Health and Fitness, Saanich Neighbourhood Place, Westshore Family, Children and Youth Centre,  Esquimalt Neighbourhood House, offer great options to make new friends!
  24. Learn the signs of post-partum depression; motherhood can be very isolating – getting out of the house for fresh air and a walk, joining a mama and me exercise group and talking to friends is proven to improve the mental health of mothers. Don’t be afraid to ask for help after baby is born!
  25. Browse birth announcements that you can send out to announce the arrival
  26. Go shopping and set aside some comfy clothes for following delivery (having clothes packed ensures comfort and prevents partners from grabbing you some yoga pants that haven’t fit in 6 months)
  27. Take naps!
  28. Make arrangements for someone to come and look after your pets, and spend a little extra time with them – make a grooming appointment and nail trimming
  29. Have a karaoke night with your girlfriends
  30. Have a poker night!
  31. Enjoy a few hours of getting your hair done
  32. Take a bubble bath (tons of non-toxic, paraben free, dye free, options at the Market on Millstream)
  33. Pick up some new delicious smelling shampoo – showers will be the new ‘me time’ for little bit!
  34. Music Bingo! Go with your partner or your best friends and sing the night away at 17 Mile Pub or Maud Hunters
  35. Bowling at Langford Lanes
  36. Fisherman’s Wharf makes for a great afternoon of taking in quirky house boats and feeding seals from the dock
  37. Walk the board walk (remember it’s a light house at the end of the walk so be sure to visit the bathroom before heading out! ;) ) The Breakwater Café + Bistro have some tasty dishes inside too!
  38. Make a bonfire on the beach and pack a picnic – Ella beach, Aylard Farm, Witty’s Lagoon are great choices!
  39. Book a relaxing prenatal massage with Pure ELLEments Wellness or Claire Lewis at WestCoast Midwives
  40. (Just to make my mom laugh): Purchase, write and send out your thank-you notes if you’ve been the lucky guest of honour at a baby shower!! (Mine were… oh, 8-9 months late!)
